Kitui County government has lost at least 10 computers, all belonging to the procurement offices in unclear circumstances.
Three of the computers were supposedly stolen on Saturday night while the other batch was stolen last night. What is shocking about this theft is that no break-in was detected.
County government officers just walked in to find their office doors and windows intact but the high value computers missing.
Many have been left wondering if the theft was a well designed ploy to derail corruption related investigations over shoddy procurement dealings in the county.
All County Government Officers at the procurement offices have been interrogated by the local directorate of criminal investigations concerning the suspicious theft.
Some of those who spoke to us seemed shell shocked over the theft of computers happening right under their noses.
‘It is true the computers were stolen. I actually don’t know whether they were stolen or taken away on purpose. We are really confused’ explained one officer.
It is to be remembered that Kitui County Government has been under the spotlight of EACC who have been tightening their evidence with a view to hurling some unscrupulous officers to court. Some of the county big fish are also targeted in the arrest onslaught over pilferage of public money.
Much of shady procurement dealings relate to the department of health which has had no substantive minister for months but only a puppet who has been in eternal acting capacity.
Recently Kitui residents were shocked to learn that one of the chief officers and a minister had procured two laptops at KSH400,000 per piece. Detectives would be interested to unravel the rot in the whole procurement dealings.
