President Uhuru Kenyatta on thursday announced the merging of the Kenya Police Service and the Administration Police into General Duty Police under the command of the Inspector General of Kenya Police Service.
Speaking during the launch of a policy framework and strategy for reorganising the National Police Service at the Kenya school of Government; President Kenyatta said that the move is aimed at eliminating waste, duplication and overlap of duties.
“In order to eliminate waste, duplication, and overlap, we will integrate 39,680 Kenya police service and 24,572 administration police into general duty police offers under the command of Deputy Inspector General Kenya Police Service,” said President Uhuru.
President Kenyatta also said the merger will interpret to better security for Kenyans.
The president also unveiled new uniforms for the General Duty police officers
“This uniform will enhance better visibility for the officers. Tungependa tuone hiyo uniform…” Uhuru said during the re-organisation of the National Police Service.
In reorganizing the police force. The president abolished several positions and designations among them Regional APS , KPS and DCI Commanders, County APS, KPS and DCI commanders, Officer Commanding Police Division and District Administration Police Commander.
Instead, He announced there will be one of each; Regional Police Commander, County Police Commander, Sub-county Commander & OCS/Ward commander- Incharge of Police station, posts and bases.
